Some words on

“Śrī Śrī Bhāgavata Patrikā”

Monthly Hindi Magazine

O
n November 1931, the foremost among paramhaṁsas, jagad-guru oṁ viṣṇupāda Śrī Śrīmad Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura ‘Prabhupāda’ started the publication of a fortnightly journal named ‘Bhāgavata’. His purpose was to initiate in the Hindi language the flowing stream of teachings of the topmost dharma. This magazine was regularly published fortnightly for several years.

Following in his footsteps (i.e in his anugatya), in June 1955, parama-gurudeva oṁ viṣṇupāda Śrī Śrīmad Bhaktiprajñāna Keśava Gosvāmī Mahārāja began publishing a monthly Hindi magazine entitled “Śrī Bhāgavata Patrikā” from Śrī Keśavajī Gauḍīya Maṭha, Mathura, whose chief editor was his disciple Śrila Gurudeva oṁ viṣṇupāda Śrī Śrīmad Bhaktivedānta Nārāyaṇa Gosvāmī Mahārāja. Under Śrila Gurudeva’s editorship, the magazine was published every month till 1974 and then it disappeared by the desire of providence.

Fortunately in March 1996, by Śrila Gurudeva’s desire, it again manifested to promote the flow of prema-dharma as practised and propagated by the most merciful Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Mahāprabhu, who advented to purify the age of Kali. Since then it is being published every month from Śrī Keśavajī Gauḍīya Maṭha, Mathura.

In 2004 “Śrī Bhāgavata Patrikā” was renamed to “Śrī Śrī Bhāgavata Patrikā” by the desire of Śrila Gurudeva. Presently, it is the only carrier of the unadulterated message of Śrī Rūpa-Raghunātha in the Hindi language.

The sole motivation for continuous publication of “Śrī Śrī Bhāgavata Patrikā” would only be to fulfil Śrila Gurudeva’s innermost desire and last order i.e “You should continue to print my books with the same enthusiasm with which they are being printed now”, (referenced from “Śrila Gurudeva’s last instructions on Book Publication” [Nov 13, 2010, Govardhana, India]). Hence, only by Śrila Gurudeva’s causeless mercy will “Śrī Śrī Bhāgavata Patrikā” remain manifest for us conditioned souls in helping us bridge our connection with Him.

Finally, we pray unto Śrila Gurudeva’s lotus feet to bless “Śrī Śrī Bhāgavata Patrikā” team in being of any little help to one and all Vaiṣnavās aspiring for the mercy of Śri Guru and Gaurānga.

[Below is an excerpt of the thoughts of oṁ viṣṇupāda 108 Śrī Śrīmad Bhaktiprajñāna Keśava Gosvāmī Mahārāja regarding the purpose of the patrikā, taken from Śrī Bhāgavat Patrikā, Year 1, Issue 1, June 1955. Those who want to read the original article in Hindi, please click here]

“The use of the word ‘Śrī’ before the word ‘Bhāgavata’ implies the eternality of Bhāgavata. The word ‘Patrikā’ means ‘the carrier of the message or the discussion’, so the use of the word ‘Patrikā’ after the word ‘Bhāgavata’ means that this patrikā bears the conduct‚ conceptions and discussions that are based on the eternal doctrines of the Bhāgavatam.

“It also spreads awareness of the meaning of Śrīmad Bhāgavatam to sampradāyas which don’t have faith in the topmost viṣṇu-tattva or gaura-bhagavat-tattva. Conceptions or writings that are temporary, subject to change, and false will not be published in it. Useless talks and any topics that give rise to anarthas such as eating, sleeping, defending and mating will not find a place in this patrikā. To fulfil the aforementioned goals, this patrikā will mainly publish the writings of previous mahājanas and living mahā-purūṣas. This is the speciality and pride of Śrī Bhāgavata Patrikā.

“In the country where once there was no other language other than the Vedic language Sanskrit, where the sole worshippable object of all souls–Lord Kṛṣṇa appeared, and where exchange of sentiments took place by the medium of the Sanskrit language as recently as the medieval times, in that country, Hindi has been established as the vehicle with which to conduct the system of administration. Whatever system is presently manifest, and whatever becomes manifest in the course of time and the ceaseless flow of change, we will adopt it favourably for the service of the divine couple Śrī Śrī Rādha Kṛṣṇa. Thus, in a favourable mood, this patrikā has adopted the national language Hindi as the vehicle for the distribution of the eternal truth.

“We pray at the lotus feet of all our readers to fully review the contents of this magazine with careful endeavour, for by doing so, they will be greatly benefited. The language and conceptions of the spiritual world differ from languages and conceptions born from the stream of worldly consciousness, and they are far more profound. Therefore, initially, some parts of this magazine may not be easily understood. Still, its contents will become sweeter and sweeter upon repeated reading, just as the tongue afflicted by jaundice gradually tastes the sweetness of sugar candy."
