Newcomers who do not have faith yet, will pose a question - “What is the use of performing ‘nagar-sankirtana’ (loud congregational chanting of the holy names outdoors)? It is sheerly useless! Why put so much effort in this? Hardly anyone listens anyway, so what effect it is going to have?!”
Please ask this to Sriman Mahaprabhu, to Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura, to our Goswamis- why have you performed this activity? If you are not able to understand, then don’t ask this question. Since they [our previous acaryas] have performed this, we will also do so. This is called following (in the footsteps).
And we will be able to comprehend the result of doing this, after some time.
What was the need for Mahaprabhu to divided His associates into seven groups and along with them, under the blazing sun, and even in the rain, He performed sankirtan the whole day, from morning till evening? What was the need?
What was the need for Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Prabhupada to engage brahmacari boys, younger than all of you and from educated families, boys like my guru maharaja [in sankirtana and begging alms]? Why did Prabhupada do this? Our acaryas are seers of the future and they are omniscient. They are well aware as to how a living entity will attain its ultimate welfare. That is why they did so.
