This powerful exposition verifies the inseparability of the philosophical conclusions of Sri Srimad Bhaktivedanta Svami Maharaja (Srila Prabhupada) and Sri Srimad Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami Maharaja (Srila Gurudeva). Quotes from both, sound siddhantic logic and unarguable evidence serve to refute any misconceptions about this. Related classes by Srila Gurudeva comprise the book’s closing pages. This book helps us understand that the teachings of these two pure Vaisnavas are completely harmonious and complementary.

In Murwillumbah, January 1997, devotees eagerly gathered daily to hear Śrī Śrīmad Bhaktivedānta Nārāyaṇa Gosvāmī Mahārāja's enthralling descriptions of pure devotees' love for Kṛṣṇa, with a higher level of devotion being introduced each successive day. "Come with me," he would begin, and all sat in submission as he gradually presented the pinnacle of devotion: becoming an unalloyed maidservant of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī. These classes, based on the fourth verse of Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta's Ādi-līlā, articulate the purpose of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu's advent with inspiring precision, thus facilitating a clear understanding for all.

Śrī Prabandhāvalī contains authentic and inspiring accounts of the life histories and teachings of modern day ācāryas in the Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava line, as well as from those from the time of Mahāprabhu – Śrī Advaita Ācārya, Śrī Nityānanda Prabhu and Śrīla Raghunātha dāsa Gosvāmī. The last three chapters of the book impart essential instructions on the practice of pure bhakti.

With the desire to establish the superiority of Vaiṣṇavism, I have written this composition, entitled Prema-pradīpa, and published it in installments in my magazine Sajjana-toṣanī. Through this, many learned youths have taken up kṛṣṇa-bhakti, and according to their desire, I have now printed it in book form.

Early one morning, Vrajendra-nandana Sri Syamasundara, the unrestricted carefree enjoyer of rasa, disguised Himself as a young woman of heart-stealing beauty and went to the courtyard of Srimati Radhika. Covering His lotus-like face with a crimson veil, He appeared before Her, His eyes bashfully lowered. Within His heart, He yearned to hear of the excellence of Her love for Him and the inferiority of His love for Her.

In this book Srila Rupa Gosvami has given a brief yet vital description of the names, forms, qualities and different services of Sri Radha's and Sri Krsna's cherished companions. In the Brhad-bhaga, or first part, of this composition, he describes those in vatsalya-rasa and madhura-rasa, and in the Laghu-bhaga, or second part, he describes those in sakhya-rasa and dasya-rasa. Sometimes, especially in the second part, he depicts in detail the beautiful forms of Sri Radha and Sri Govinda, as well as Their bodily limbs, Their ornaments and the astonishing paraphernalia used by Them. Such a comprehensive description of Sri Krsna and His companions will not be found in any other single scripture.

In his Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu-bindu, Śrīpāda Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura has briefly explained the path of rāgānuga-bhakti (spontaneous loving devotion). He has given a more detailed description of the same subject matter in this book, presented in two illuminations. In the First Illumination, he ascertains the paths of vaidhī and rāgānuga-bhakti.

The Second Illumination presents concepts in relation to Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s aspects of supreme opulence (aiśvarya) and consummate sweetness (mādhurya). Also described are the principles of Kṛṣṇa’s sarvajñatā (omniscience) and mugdhatā (quality of being charmingly oblivious and captivated), the concepts of svakīya (marital love) and parakīya (paramour love), the types of cherished eternal forms attained by rāgānuga devotees upon ascending to the realm of perfected divine love (prema), the authority of the Yogamāyā potency, and so on.

More than five hundred years ago, the Supreme Lord Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu sat with His intimate devotee Śrī Rāmānanda Rāya on the banks of the river Godāvarī. For the benefit of all living beings, the Lord inquired from him about the ultimate goal of life, as if ignorant.

Śrī Rāmānanda’s initial response did not satisfy Lord Caitanya, who probed for a deeper answer. Again and again He rejected the goal Śrī Rāmānanda put forth, calling it external. Finally, when Śrī Rāmānanda touched upon the natural, eternal religion of the soul, the Lord was somewhat satisfied. His subsequent inquiries continued to depths that astounded and delighted His devotee, who replied wonderfully to each of them.

This book, Sage and Seekers, holds a collection of quotes which encapsulate the essence of the ancient path of bhakti-yoga (seeking connection with the Absolute through loving devotion). They have been spoken or written by one of the leading bhakti-yoga teachers and scholars, oṁ viṣṇupāda Śrī Śrīmad Bhaktivedānta Nārāyaṇa Gosvāmī Mahārāja. Our desire is to share with the world the wisdom he has distributed: essential truths illuminating the science of self (the undying soul within us all), the esoteric nature of God and our eternal connection with Him. These teachings have manifested in our lives a joyful discovery and hope that belongs freely to all, whether or not they have prior familiarity with the bhakti-yoga philosophy.

After taking shelter of this desire tree of aspirations presnted by Srila Visvanath Cakravati Thakura, that is to say, in order to attain the desire for the seva described in this compilations, one should sincerely, and without duplicity, with body, mind and words, remain under the guidance of the devoted persons who are completely immersed in this seva. These topmost, incomparable and transcendental aspirations can then quickly be fulfilled. Thus, the name of this book, Sri Sankalpa-kalpadrumah, is appropriate, because it makes one's desires bear fruit. The sadhaka's life attains success only when the impetus to obtain these trancendental aspirations appear in the heart by the causeless mercy of the guru and Vaisnavas. 

Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam is the spotless Purāṇa, the prema of Vraja permeating its every śloka. It is therefore natural to conclude that by hearing the Bhāgavatam from a person whose heart is similarly spotless, being suffused with that same prema, one will receive its true message and one’s own heart will effectively be transformed. It is with this purpose that we humbly present the series of classes given in Badger, 1999, on the secret truths of the Bhāgavatam – from the First Canto to the Tenth – culminating in the significance of Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s pastimes in Vṛndāvana.

Secrets of the Undiscovered Self was kindly presented in the form of a discourse by such a selfrealized personality, Srila Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami Maharaja, a pre-eminent saint and one of the foremost teachers of divine wisdom in the present day.
